Overseas Study
If you plan to participate in a study abroad program and require documentation of disability in order to receive academic accommodations, DSS will provide you with a copy of your Eligibility Letter and/or other necessary documentation.

In the event that you are interested in participation in overseas programs specifically designed for students with disabilities, please contact DSS for more information.

Second Tier Testing Accommodations
If you plan to take standardized tests such as the PRAXIS, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, etc., you may be eligible for test modifications, however, determination of your eligibility is made by the testing company, not by IUB DSS.

Important Note: Receiving services for disability at Indiana University does not automatically guarantee that you will be eligible for the same supports from a private testing company. Each testing company has a separate procedure by which you will need to make application for accommodations. This can often be a confusing and time-consuming process but DSS can help guide you through it.

We strongly encourage you to contact DSS well in advance of when you wish to take such a test.

Van Service
Transportation assistance is available to students with severely limited mobility. The DSS vans provide intra campus rides based on student schedule during regular class hours. Students requesting the van service will need to fill out a request form and submit documentation to the DSS office.

Study Skills, Organization, and Time Management
Achieving a healthy balance of academic and social demands is the key to getting the most out of the student experience. If you are having a hard time managing the multiple demands of university life, you may wish to meet with a DSS Coordinator.

In focused, active, goal-oriented sessions, you will investigate why your performance is not meeting your expectations. By enhancing self awareness of your unique learning processes, you will better learn to cope with such issues as time management and will develop more effective learning strategies.

These individualized discussions are available to all DSS students, and can be scheduled by calling the DSS office at 855-7578.

Tutoring
The Office of Disability Services for Students will assist you to locate private tutors on campus and in Bloomington.

Several departments offer lists of recommended tutors.

If you do not see a specific department listed, you may wish to make an appointment to meet with a DSS Coordinator for further assistance or you may follow these tips to find tutors on your own:

  • Ask your instructor or AI to recommend someone
  • Check in the department for a posted list of tutors
  • Contact the department to request permission to send an e-mail advertisement to their graduate student e-mail list.
    • Sample Ad: I am a student in (class name/number) taught by (instructor’s name) and I am looking for a private tutor. If you are interested, please reply to this email to make arrangements.
  • Advertise and search the web using the IU Career Development Center at www.iucareers.com or OneStart at www.onestart.iu.edu

Scholarships
Disability Services for Students offers several endowed scholarships annually. Applications are made available during the spring semester to any student who has already established eligibility for disability assistance at IUB.

The Dr. and Mrs. Harold A. Cohen Scholarship is offered each year to incoming freshman only. Incoming freshman who are Indiana residents with physical, auditory or visual disabilities are invited to apply for this award.

The DSS office also maintains a list of scholarships for students with disabilities sponsored by organizations outside Indiana University.

For more information visit Additional Resources for Students or contact the office.
